Maternity Photos at Carpenteria Bluffs

I’ve been so lucky to photograph J+C’s relationship milestones over the past few years. Engagement, wedding, and now maternity! This really felt like a full-circle session. The Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve has a little bit of everything: sweeping ocean views, wind-sculpted trees, wildflowers depending on the season, and if you're lucky, a seal or two resting on the beach below. It's quieter than the more popular Santa Barbara spots, which means fewer crowds and more room to breathe.

Tips for Your Own Bluffs Maternity Session

If you're considering the Carpinteria Bluffs for your own maternity photos, a few things I always tell clients:

  • Time it for golden hour. The light an hour before sunset is soft and flattering, and it makes the whole coastline glow.

  • Dress for wind. Flowy fabrics photograph beautifully out here, but bring a light layer — evenings can turn cool fast. But I’m also a sucker for a jeans and white shirt look.

  • Check the tide and season. Depending on the time of year, you might catch wildflowers, and low tide can open up more of the beach below for extra shots.

  • Leave no trace. The bluffs are a protected preserve, so we stick to marked trails and pack out anything brought in.
