When couples tell me they're dreaming of a sunny California beach wedding, they're often picturing June, July, or August. Blue skies, warm sand, endless sunshine.

Here's what I tell them: Santa Barbara doesn't follow the rules you'd expect.

After photographing multiple weddings and elopements along our coastline, I've learned when the weather actually cooperates—and when it surprises you in ways that aren't always welcome.

Summer: The Fog Season (Yes, Really)

June through August (June Gloom through Fogust)

This shocks most people, but summer in Santa Barbara often means fog. Not the dreamy, wispy kind that burns off by 10am. The thick, gray, marine layer kind that can settle in for days.

Locals call it "June Gloom" and "May Gray," but honestly, it can linger well into August. Some mornings you wake up to complete overcast. Other days you get what we call "high fog"—bright but hazy.

The upside? If you get a clear summer day, it's absolutely stunning. Warm temperatures, long daylight hours, and that iconic California golden hour that stretches forever.

The reality? Fog can create beautiful light, but if you’re dreaming of golden sunset portraits - It's a gamble.

Spring: Beautiful but Breezy

March through May

Spring in Santa Barbara is gorgeous—wildflowers blooming, everything green and fresh from winter rains, and temperatures warming up. The light is beautiful, soft and clear.

But spring also means wind. Sometimes a gentle breeze that makes your dress flow perfectly. Other times, gusts that whip your hair around and make outdoor ceremonies a wrestling match with your vows.

The upside? Fewer crowds, lush landscapes, and those occasional perfect, calm days that feel like a gift. Plus, spring typically has less fog than summer.

The reality? Bring hair ties as backup. And maybe have a Plan B for where you'll stand if the wind picks up.

Fall: The Golden Season

October and November

Here's the secret: fall is Santa Barbara's best-kept weather secret. Our true summer.

By October, the fog has lifted. The winds have calmed. What you're left with is consistently warm, clear, golden weather. The kind of days that actually match what you pictured when you dreamed of California.

The ocean sparkles. The sunsets are spectacular. The temperatures hover in the 70s and 80s—warm enough for a beach ceremony without being uncomfortably hot. The light is rich and golden without the harsh intensity of summer.

The upside? This is as close to "guaranteed" beautiful weather as you can get in Santa Barbara.

The reality? This is my favorite time of year for shooting.

Winter: The Wild Card

December through February

Winter weddings can be absolutely magical—dramatic skies, moody light, and the possibility of stunning storm clouds at sunset. But they can also be rainy, cold, and unpredictable.

If you're flexible and adventurous, winter can give you some of the most unique and dramatic photos. If you need weather guarantees, this isn't your season.

My Honest Recommendation

If you want the best odds for beautiful weather in Santa Barbara, plan for late September through November. You'll get the warm, clear, golden California weather you're dreaming of, with minimal fog and wind.

Sometimes the fog creates an ethereal, dreamy quality. Sometimes the wind makes for the most romantic, windswept portraits. Sometimes a spring day surprises us with perfection.

The key is knowing what you're walking into and being flexible. Weather can't ruin your day if you're prepared to embrace whatever it brings.

Practical Tips for Any Season

Have a wind strategy. Even in fall, coastal breezes happen. Bring a hair tie, choose hairstyles that work with movement, embrace the windswept look.

Layer for temperature shifts. Santa Barbara mornings can be cool even in summer. Bring a jacket or shawl for early ceremonies.

Trust the golden hour. No matter the season, the hour before sunset is almost always magical here. Plan your photos accordingly.

Be flexible. Some of my favorite images have happened when couples embraced unexpected weather—fog that created mystery, wind that made their vows feel epic, cloudy skies that gave us soft, romantic light.
