Santa Cruz Island Elopement Photographer | Channel Islands National Park Wedding
Most people don't realize you can elope in a National Park 25 miles off the coast of Santa Barbara — one with no roads, no cell service, sea caves the size of cathedrals, and a coastline that looks the way California must have looked before anyone got here. Santa Cruz Island is that place, and it is one of the most extraordinary elopement locations in the entire state.
Eloping on Santa Cruz Island: Why It's Unlike Anything Else
Santa Cruz Island is the largest of the eight Channel Islands and the crown jewel of Channel Islands National Park. It sits just off the coast of Ventura and Santa Barbara, close enough to see on a clear day from the Santa Barbara waterfront, but far enough to feel like another world entirely.
The island has dramatic sea cliffs dropping into cobalt water, ridge trails with panoramic views stretching from the mainland mountains to open ocean, and a silence that is genuinely rare. There are no hotels, no roads, no noise except wind and waves and the occasional bark of a sea lion. Getting here requires a ferry from Ventura Harbor through Island Packers — and that journey, with the coastline of Southern California receding behind you and the islands growing larger ahead, is already the beginning of something special.
For couples who want an elopement that is genuinely adventurous and completely private, Santa Cruz Island delivers in a way no mainland venue can.
What an Elopement Day on Santa Cruz Island Looks Like
Because the island is only accessible by ferry and the boats run on fixed schedules, a Santa Cruz Island elopement requires a bit more planning than a typical session — but that planning pays off in an experience that feels entirely earned.
Option 1: Day Trip Elopement Island Packers runs day trips to Scorpion Anchorage, the main landing area on the east end of the island. Day trips typically depart in the morning and return in the late afternoon. This works well for a ceremony and portraits in the morning light, with time to explore before the return crossing.
Option 2: Overnight / Camping Elopement This is the one I'd push you toward. Camp at Scorpion Ranch campground the night before, wake up on the island at sunrise, and have the entire golden hour — both morning and evening — to yourselves. Sunset on Santa Cruz with no ferry to catch and the Milky Way overhead afterward is something you will not forget.
A typical elopement day on the island includes the landing at Scorpion Anchorage, a hike up to one of the ridge overlooks (the Potato Harbor overlook trail is roughly 4 miles round trip and has views that stop you in your tracks), a ceremony on the bluffs, and portraits during golden hour on the rocks above the anchorage.
Logistics: What You Need to Know
Getting to the island: Island Packers operates ferries from Ventura Harbor. Book early — spots fill quickly, especially in spring and fall. The crossing takes about an hour. Or hire a private charter.
Permits: A Special Use Permit from the National Park Service is required for weddings and elopement photography on Santa Cruz Island. Apply through the Channel Islands National Park permit system well in advance of your date.
Marriage license: Obtain a Santa Barbara or Ventura County marriage license before your ceremony. An officiant and one witness are required — a friend or family member can get ordained online.
What to wear: Think layered and windproof. The island is reliably windier than the mainland, and mornings can be cool even in summer. Flowy fabrics photograph beautifully in wind. Comfortable footwear is essential if you want to hike to the overlooks — trail runners or sturdy sandals.
Photography equipment: I carry everything I need for full-day shoots in remote locations. No extra logistics needed on your end.
Why Work with a Local Santa Barbara Photographer for Channel Islands Elopements
The Channel Islands are close to my heart in the deepest way — this coastline and these islands are part of why I picked up a camera in the first place. As a Santa Barbara-based photographer, I've spent years on and around the Channel Islands, and I bring that familiarity to every session here. I know the light, the ferry schedule, the hiking routes, and the moments on the island that catch you off guard.
I also believe strongly in shooting Leave No Trace. The Channel Islands National Park and the surrounding Marine Sanctuary are extraordinary ecological resources. We follow all park rules, stay on trail, and treat the island with the care it deserves.
If you're planning a Santa Cruz Island elopement or are curious whether it might be right for you, I'd love to talk through it.
