And if there's one thing I know for certain, it's this: the planning matters just as much as the moment itself.

Step 01

Choose a Location That Feels Like You Two

Santa Barbara offers an almost unfair number of stunning proposal settings. The key isn't just finding somewhere beautiful — it's finding somewhere that feels true to your relationship. Here are my personal favorites, and what makes each one special from a photographer's perspective:

East Beach

Missy's Tip

When you've picked your spot, visit it solo beforehand. Walk the path, notice where the light falls at the time of day you're planning, and figure out where you want to be standing when you kneel. This will make you feel so much calmer on the day itself

Step 02

Time It for the Golden Hour

The hour before sunset in Santa Barbara is genuinely magic — the sky turns warm amber and rose, the shadows go soft, and every photo looks like it was painted. If you can build your proposal around golden hour, please do.

That said, early morning proposals have their own quiet intimacy that I absolutely love capturing. Before the beach fills up, there's this hush — just the two of you and the ocean. It's incredibly moving. Spring (March through May) brings lush hills and wildflowers; summer and early fall offer the most consistent sunshine.

Step 03

Hire a Hidden Photographer — This Is the Most Important Part

I say this as someone who has documented dozens of these moments: having a photographer nearby, positioned discreetly so your partner has no idea, is the single best thing you can do for your proposal.

The ring shots and posed portraits after are wonderful. But the photo of your partner's face in the very first second — that's the one that will make you both cry for the rest of your lives. That's what I'm there to capture.

When interviewing proposal photographers, ask to see their candid work specifically — not just their posed portraits. The best photographers in this space are practically invisible until the moment is over.

Craft a Cover Story That Actually Works

Getting your partner to the right place at the right time without arousing suspicion takes a little creativity — but the best cover stories are always simple. Here are a few that work beautifully in Santa Barbara:

• "Let's go for a sunset walk — I heard the view from that beach is incredible."

• Book a dinner reservation nearby and propose on the walk there. It explains why you're dressed up.

• Plan a wine tasting day in the Santa Ynez Valley with a "scenic detour" on the way back.

• Suggest a photography session — it explains any camera setup nearby and gets your partner comfortable being photographed.

• Invite close friends for what feels like a casual gathering, with the proposal as the centerpiece surprise.

Step 05

Plan Something Beautiful for After

The proposal lasts a minute. The evening after it lasts forever. Having a thoughtful plan for the hours following shows your partner you envisioned a whole celebration — not just a single beat.

Santa Barbara has wonderful options: an intimate dinner at Loquita on State Street for Spanish tapas and sangria, a sunset wine tasting, or a suite at one of the area's luxury properties. The San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito is widely considered one of the most romantic hotels in all of California - it's absolutely worth it for this night.

And if you've booked a photographer, many of us will stay for a short celebratory session right after.

Step 06

The Small Details That Make It Perfect

• Pick up a small bouquet from the Santa Barbara Farmers' Market — local, seasonal flowers make the moment feel thoughtful and real.

• Write down a few key things you want to say. You don't need a script, just anchors so nerves don't erase your words.

• Have champagne waiting nearby — in a cooler in the car, or pre-arranged at the restaurant you're heading to after.

• Keep the ring on your person at all times on the day — in a dedicated ring pouch in your front pocket.

• Phone on silent. This is the one you'll be most glad you remembered.
